Picturesque Middle Ages

The old St. Martins Church, a Roman building in its core, is located in Muffendorf / Bad Godesberg in a settlement, which already existed in Carolingian times.
Surrounded by a wall and a cemetery, the church is located on a little hill at the edge of the picturesque suburb Muffendorf, which belongs to the best-maintained settlements of half-timbered houses in the Rhineland. It was already mentioned in a document of 913 and is a building from the early Romanesque times, which can be gathered from the compact choir and the apsis. Expansions took place for several times already, for the last time in the 17th century. The picturesque half-timbered pediment over the Eastern choir and the powerful supporting walls of the tower mark the church as one of the oldest ones in the Rhineland.
The baptismal font in the side aisle with its Romanesque relief ornaments, which can be traced back to Irish patterns, are absolutely worth seeing. The tour around the church displays the development of the windows and the decoration patterns of the Rhenish Romanesque style. During a renovation period an altar made of “Trachyt” was found inside of the church which was consecrated to the Goddess Diana, which leads to the conclusion that a Roman temple was located here in former times.
