A jewel of Romanesque style

The great cycle of medieval mural painting and its construction as a double church make the St. Klemens Church in Schwarzrheindorf become one of the most important churches of Romanesque style in Germany.

The double church in Beuel, a city district on the right side of the Rhine, was consecrated by the arch-bishop of Cologne and the Elector Arnold von Wied in the presence of King Konrad III in 1151. It was a family foundation added to the fortress of the Earl von Wied. Arnold von Wied left the church to his sister Hedwig. She established a Benedictine monastery for women there, which had been under Napoleonic rule until its abolition in 1806. The lower church was meant for the community, the upper church for the lords of the castle.

The rooms are on top of each other and have their own altars; they are separated just by an eight-sided opening in the floor of the upper church, through which one can see the altar of the lower church. The church displays the biggest coherent cycle of mural paintings of Romanesque style about the Old Testament in Germany.
